Welcome to Longfellows Books

Thank you very much for visiting our site.  We are a bookstore which is open to the public and located in Portland, Oregon at SE 14th and Division St. in SE Portland, less than 5 minutes from the Hawthorne Bridge.  Our official hours are 1-5 Monday through Saturday though we often open earlier and close later than those hours.  We are happy to set up an appointment if you have good books to sell or are interested in specific materials which we have in the store.  We also make house calls for significant books and/or estates.

We have over 7,000 books presently listed for sale on this website.  We now accept only  Paypal payments through this site, as the Federal government has rightly made the requirements for transmitting credit card information via the internet more stringent and difficult.  Please contact us directly at  longfellowspdx(at)comcast(dot)net
with any questions or concerns.

We are one of the last bookstores in Portland which buys books and other paper outright.  We pay well for quality books and entire estates of high quality materials and can make house calls if we are interested in your materials.  With 35 years combined years experience in the business we will fairly value your books and make you a cash offer if we are interested in your books.  We buy and sell a variety of rare and unique books, posters, vintage photographs, paper ephemera, programs, catalogues, magazines and related materials and pay fairly (usually as much or more than anyone else in town) for books that are truly rare and special.  Please contact us directly at (503) 239-5222   if you have any questions about our stock or materials you are interested in selling.

Again, we welcome you to the website for Longfellows Books, one of the oldest bookstores located in beautiful Portland, Oregon.  We like to describe ourselves as the best small used and rare bookstore in a city of bibliophiles.  2012 is our 31st anniversary of being in business and the store has been owned and operated by Jon Hagen since it opened in 1981.  Jon moved to Oregon in the mid-1950s and his son Nile is now actively helping to run the store.  Jon and Nile are the only people you will deal with when contacting us.  We have a combined 35 years of experience dealing in rare books and paper items and we have been successfully selling used and rare books and magazines online for nearly a decade.

While we enjoy having a quality used social sciences bookstore we are passionate about fine rare and antiquarian books and as such attempt to buy and sell the best materials we can find.  In fact, you can see some of our musings and recent acquisitions at our blog:
longfellowspdx.blogspot.com.  We also have a basement full of rare and collectible periodicals and have recently begun buying and selling decorative pieces as well as vintage photographs, thus we have a huge collection of decorative magazine covers from as far back as the turn of the 19th century, along with a solid collection of unique, one of a kind ephemera and paper items, many relating to Portland and the Pacific Northwest.  Please contact us for more information about such things as none of the decorative pieces, photographs or magazines are listed on this site.  You can also see some of our magazine covers, including many incredible Art Deco and Erte covers from the 1930s at www.vintagemagazineart.com

We are indeed one the few remaining family owned and operated bookstores in the city and we specialize in quality used and rare booksmagazines, sheet music and ephemera, with our areas of expertise being first editions, quality literature, Pacific Northwest History, the classics and the social sciences. The store was opened in 1981 on Milwaukee Avenue in SE Portland, Oregon and has been in its present location for more than 20 years.  We are proud to be able to say that we have been featured as a "Willamette Week"  pick of the year and in their 2009 annual Finder issue of the best shops and restaurants in the city and surrounding area.  We have also been listed in the "Best Places" series of books for Portland and the Pacific Northwest four times in the last 9 years and are very proud to announce that we have been selected as one of their favorite/Best Places for the 2010-11 edition.  We are very serious about our business and while we specialize in the rare and valuable we also have a wide selection of quality literature and the social sciences for those looking for something engaging to read.

Located at 1401 SE Division St, we are easily found when approaching from any direction in the metro area.  Division St. is located between Hawthorne and Powell Blvds. and 14th Avenue is close to the river and downtown Portland so the Ross Island, Hawthorne and Morrison Bridges all lead you to us quite easily.  If approaching from the North via the Hawthorne or Morrison Bridges we recommend you take 11th Avenue, which is a two-lane one-way street leading you North directly to Division, at which point you take a left and travel three blocks to find us.  If approaching from further North you can take Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. to just past the Hawthorne Bridge, where you will take a right at the signs directing you to the Ross Island Bridge and follow Division St. straight to our front door.  We have free parking on all of the surface streets and a private parking lot for up to four cars, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a place unless you arrive close to 3 pm on a school day, as we are located across the street from Abernathy Grade School.  To obtain directions from Google Maps, please click here:  http://maps.google.com/maps?ct=reset

If you aren't able to visit us in person, please browse our inventory of books and magazines, including rare, antiquarian and out of print titles.  We presently have more than 7,500 books online and are shooting to reach 10,000 listed in the future.  This is in addition to our collections of collectible sheet music and magazines.  Please take the time to browse our stock and if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact us.  As a small online retailer we hope that you feel totally comfortable with the idea of ordering from us. We understand that ordering anything off of the internet can be anxiety inducing, and we all have enough of that to go around these days so we assure you that we take the utmost care when it comes to protecting your information and making sure that our customers are completely satisfied with their orders. We have been selling our books online for more than 8 years via other websites, and opened this online storefront in September 2006, meaning that we have much experience and have never had a problem with identity theft or .  We have a secure credit card processing service, pack and ship our own books, and are always available to answer any questions you may have regarding the site or our stock.  Lastly, we are happy to accept payment via PAYPAL so if you would prefer to pay via that method please feel free to contact us via email and we will be happy to arrange things.

For new customers who would like to visit the store in person, our hours are afternoons 1-5pm Monday through Saturday.  We routinely open early and stay late and occasionally we do have to close earlier than our normal hours (to make it to the post office before it closes or to a Doctor's appointment, etc).  We are also occasionally closed due to health complications or the like and hope that you will understand if you stop by when we are not able to open the store. We are clearly a family owned and run business and hope that you expect to encounter a little character when you visit us.  We also hope that you will understand if you catch us at an inopportune moment.  If you're coming from across the city- or even from another city- please do give us a call at (503) 239-5222 to make sure we'll be there to help you. Thank you very much for visiting us online and we hope to see you in person some day.

Again, thank you very much for looking and we hope we will be able to do business with you in the future.  If you are interested in selling books, magazines, photographs, maps or rare paper items please contact us at 503 239-5222 or at longfellowspdx@comcast.net  We are fairly selective when it comes to buying but are willing and able to pay more than anyone else in town for quality and rare items.  We prefer large libraries or collections of books but are absolutely willing to buy single items if they are noteworthy, rare or of particular interest to us.  Thank you again for looking and we hope this finds you well.
