Open afternoons Monday through Saturday (1-5 pm)

We buy and sell quality used and rare books every day.

We also purchase ephemera, sheet music, rare periodicals, posters and photographs.

If you are interested in selling books or other items, please call to schedule a time to bring them into the store.  We do make house calls for estates.

We pay the highest prices for fine rare books (and similar items) and occasionally take exceptional books on consignment.

Our site lists over 7,000 books from our inventory, ranging in price from $10 to more than $5,000.

Thank you very much for visiting our site.  Established in 1980 by the present owner Jon Hagen, we are one of Portland's oldest bookstores and specialize in fine used, rare and antiquarian books including Pacific Northwest/Oregon History, the classics, modern first editions, fine illustrated editions and high quality books of all kinds.  Under certain conditions we also take exceptionally fine and valuable books on consignment and we are open to discussing that option when appropriate.  We have had much success in this arena and secured higher prices for the owners of said books than they would have received anywhere else.

We are centrally located at SE 14th and Division
St. in SE Portland, Oregon and are less than 5 minutes from downtown via the Hawthorne or Ross Island Bridges.  We are only open afternoons and our hours are 1-5 PM Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday) though we often open earlier and close later than 1 and 5.  Feel free to call the store at (503) 239-5222 to check in regarding our availability on any given day.  We are happy to schedule an appointment if you have good books to sell, so please contact us directly if you would like to bring in a library of books.  In certain cases we also make house calls for significant books and/or large estates.

We are one of the last bookstores in Portland which buys books and other collectible paper outright.  We pay well for quality books and entire estates of high quality materials and can make house calls if we are interested in your materials.  With 35 years combined years experience in the business we will fairly value your books and make you a cash offer if we are interested in your books.  We buy and sell a variety of rare and unique books, posters, vintage photographs, paper ephemera, programs, catalogues, magazines and related materials and pay fairly for books that are rare or out of the ordinary.  Please contact us directly at
(503) 239-5222
if you have any questions about our stock or materials you are interested in selling.

We post new acquisitions and the occasional musing on our blog:
longfellowspdx.blogspot.com.  We also have a basement full of rare and collectible periodicals and have recently begun buying and selling decorative pieces as well as vintage photographs, thus we have a huge collection of decorative magazine covers from as far back as the turn of the 19th century, along with a solid collection of unique, one of a kind ephemera and paper items, many relating to Portland and the Pacific Northwest.  Please contact us for more information about such things as none of the decorative pieces, photographs or magazines are listed on this site.  You can also see some of our magazine covers, including many incredible Art Deco and Erte covers from the 1930s at www.vintagemagazineart.com

The store was opened in 1981 on Milwaukee Avenue in SE Portland, Oregon and has been in its present location for more than 20 years.  We are proud to be able to say that we have been featured as a "Willamette Week"  pick of the year and in their 2009 annual Finder issue of the best shops and restaurants in the city and surrounding area.  We have also been listed in the "Best Places" series of books for Portland and the Pacific Northwest five times in the last ten years.

Located at 1401 SE Division St, we are easily found when approaching from any direction in the metro area.  Division St. is located between Hawthorne and Powell Blvds. and 14th Avenue is close to the river and downtown Portland so the Ross Island, Hawthorne and Morrison Bridges all lead you to us quite easily.  If approaching from the North via the Hawthorne or Morrison Bridges we recommend you take 11th Avenue, which is a two-lane one-way street leading you North directly to Division, at which point you take a left and travel three blocks to find us.  If approaching from further North you can take Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. to just past the Hawthorne Bridge, where you will take a right at the signs directing you to the Ross Island Bridge and follow Division St. straight to our front door.  We have free parking on all of the surface streets and a private parking lot for up to four cars, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a place unless you arrive close to 3 pm on a school day, as we are located across the street from Abernathy Grade School.  To obtain directions from Google Maps, please click here:  http://maps.google.com/maps?ct=reset

For new customers who would like to visit the store in person, our hours are afternoons 1-5pm Monday through Saturday.  We routinely open early and stay late and occasionally we do have to close earlier than our normal hours (to make it to the post office before it closes or to a Doctor's appointment, etc).  We are also occasionally closed due to health complications or the like and hope that you will understand if you stop by when we are not able to open the store. We are clearly a family owned and run business and hope that you expect to encounter a little character when you visit us.  We also hope that you will understand if you catch us at an inopportune moment.  If you're coming from across the city- or even from another city- please do give us a call at (503) 239-5222 to make sure we'll be there to help you. Thank you very much for visiting us online and we hope some day to see you in person.
